Coin and Paper Money Collecting/gold-coloured dime 2004 D-mint

Question
I found a 2004 D-mint US dime the other day which is distinctly gold-coloured. It is in every way identical to my other 2004 D's, except the colour is not a bright silver, but a clear, bright even gold. I have never seen a new dime like this before. It is in good condition, no scratching and no wear on the edges. I am curious. Is this a fake? or a mistake? The gold is definitely the actual colour of the coin, but it seems to be regular metal to me. I would appreciate any insight you have on this, and thank you in advance.

Answer
Lindsey,

The gold color is called toning (AKA tarnish).  Caused by improper storage and/or exposure to chemicals, it is the discoloration of the copper/nickel metal on the surface of the coin.  Yellow or gold is one of the first colors that toned coins turn -- followed by darker shades of blue purple or red, then brown, then black.

Beautifully toned coins are sought after by some collectors, so if your coin eventually exhibits a rainbow of colors, you may find it to be worth $10 or more.
