Coin and Paper Money Collecting/two-headed quarter

Question
Hi.  We found an unusual quarter in my son's piggy bank.  It has a head on both sides.  One side says 1980, the other says 1987.  It seems lighter then other quarters.  Any idea what it is or if it's real?
Thanks!

Answer
Chris,

You have a manufactured novelty item, known as a magician's coin, made by altering two normal coins and gluing the pieces together.  The weight will be off, it will not "ring" like a normal quarter when dropped, and under magnification along the inside of the raised rim on one side or the other you will find a seam where the coins are joined together.

Novelty value is a couple dollars.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
