Coin and Paper Money Collecting/misstamped US quarter (probably NY)
Expert: PAPAJACK - 5/8/2008
QuestionIs there any value to what I assume was supposed to be a NY quarter that has been misstamped so the back does not show anything but a rough cut blank? The front has the standard head and writing. No date is discernible. Thanks for your input.
AnswerHello Cherie,
If the reverse still has the nickel layer on it the piece must be seen by an experienced coin person.
Many times the surface was removed mechanically after it left the US Mint.
For one side to be properly struck and detailed the coin blank must have been the proper thickness and the die on the opposite side must have been present as well.
There is only a chance that the metal blank delaminated (one layer came off) after it was properly made.
These do not hold as much value as a coin with die error but do sell for a couple of dollars to an error collector.
Let me know if you need the name of an American Numismatic Association member/dealer in your area.
If you write back with
1) Some locations like the nearest large cities,
2) A few telephone area codes and
3) Some postal ZIP CODES for the area of the coins use the private question option by checking the box on the question page.
I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.
Thank You and Good Luck
