Question
My mother has a 1766 or 1788 Quarter dollar. There is a man on the front which I told her might be Washinton. It's from Virginia. It has a ship on the back. She said it needs polishing. She would like to know what ship and who is on the front. Also please tell us where we could find the value of the coin.

Answer
Mandy,

You have a year 2000 Virginia commemorative state quarter -- from the sounds of it, in circulated condition.

See if it matches the pictures here :

It is George Washington on the front, and there are actually three ships on the back of the coin : the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery.

More info about this coin can be found on the mint's website, here :

There were hundreds of million sof these coins minted, so it's not rare.  In circulated condition, this coin has no added value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
