Question
I have a very shiny 1942 nickel with an "S" above Monticello. Can you tell me what the "S" stands for.

Answer
Hello Dawn,

The S mint mark is for the San Francisco Mint in California.
These are nick-named War Nickel's since they contain 35% silver they have the mint mark letter P,D or S stamped over Monticello on the reverse.
They sell from 50 cents to three dollars depending on the state of preservation.
