Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1946 dime/penny

Question
I have a 1946 face and wheat penny back. It a little thinner than a dime but the same size as a dime. I cannot see anything thru it to the other side. If you would like I could send a picture of it. Can I send it off somewhere to be appraised.
Thanks,
Vicki St. Pierre

Answer
Vivki,

If it is silver colored on the dime side and copper colored on the penny side, then it is definitely a man-made novelty item known as a "Magician's Coin", made by altering two coins and gluing the pieces back together.  Use a magnifier and check both sides of the coin, looking for a seam where the two altered coins come together.

These novelty coins sell regularly on eBay and at magic shops for a couple dollars.

Dan

p.s. if the coin is all one color, please send pictures.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
