Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1964 Quarter
Expert: PAPAJACK - 6/10/2008
QuestionHi, I have a 1964 MS UNC (NMM) quarter, I believe to be machine doubled, it has about a 10-15% rotation, the doubling occurs under the letters very prominent In God we Trust, and almost all letters on the coin, even the FG disgners initials, the unique thing is the date the 4 is broken and a piece is pointed downward still attached, the
overall coin lacks much detail, there is some doubling on the back also, dont know what to do with it and cant find any information on it can you advise, Thanks, Nelson
AnswerHello Nelson,
Only an error collector really seeks out and pays a high price for this type of coin. Since it is not a repeating error caused by the hub or die during the minting process it has a smaller added value. It has to be seen to be evaluated.
You should take it to a coin shop when you have some time and get a professionals opinion. The double image may have happened after it left the mint.
For more information on errors look for the "The ERROR COIN ENCYCLOPEDIA" by Arnold Margolis your library should have something on it.
I also want to mention COMBINED ORGANIZATION of NUMISMATIC ERROR COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION; they are the ultimate experts in the error coin field.
CONECA is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Re-punched images and double strikes just to name a few.
If you want to locate a coin dealer near you to have a look at the coin, write me back with your general location (nearest large cities), some telephone area code or codes for your local and some zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy. They will look at the coin for free.
Please remember to rate this answer. And check the nomination box on the rating page below any comments you may have.
If there any more information you require on this question just ask.
Thank You and Good Luck
