Question
I have some old coins [inherited], like 1814 dime and others.  How can I best determine their value?

Also, I have a smooth edged 1995 quarter.  How much is it worth?

Answer
Hello Ellen,

Each type of coin has to be seen to get a proper evaluation. Each coin can range greatly in value depending on its grade (or state of preservation).

If the coin is from circulation held on to over years of collecting the prices realized are not that high.

I can give you a start in the valuation of the coins. Try to get your hands on a copy of the RED BOOK titled - A GUIDE BOOK of UNITED STATES COINS - by R. S. Yeoman. It is all you need for most of these coins.  Along with a good magnifier and light source.

For the 1995 Smooth-edge Quarter;
This coin sounds like it may have been altered from the description.  It would need to be seen by a professional to be sure.
There is a chance the mint missed the edge reeding operation but this is done before the stamping on both sides.
If it is a missing mint operation it is still of little value. The errors worth more money are those that the die imparts to the coin when it is struck. Not a mechanical operation error.

If you want to locate a coin dealer near you to have a look at it write me back with your general location (nearest large cities), some telephone area code or codes for your local and some zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy. They will look at the coin for free.

Good Luck
