Coin and Paper Money Collecting/merc error

Question
I have found a error coin in a pile of mercs with only 3 digits present on face (194). It is in very  good shape and close to unc in my humble opinion. Have you hear of such a error? is it a common occurence? the detail of the rest of the coin is the best I have seen in many thousands that I have gone thru  thank you for you comments

Answer
Edward,

Assuming your coin has not been altered,  the missing digit is caused by a foreign substance (like machine grease) that got into the die and prevented the full striking of the coin.

A somewhat rare error, but it has low collector interest -- value at a few dollars.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
