Question
My relative in Europe has these two dollars and is interested in selling them in the US. Do you think they are real and if so what is their value. Thank you so much for your assistance.
I just realized I can send you only one image.
AnswerHello Alex,
Both of these coins, if authentic, are valuable. Many fakes are reported especially in parts of the world outside North America.
In 1800 they were made at Philadelphia 220,920 were made with no mint mark. But there were 6 variations of the design and each coin must be seen to properly attribute the type.
What does your piece say around the edge? It should weigh 26.96 grams.
An authentic on varies in value from $265 in grade 3 or 4 to $3250 in grades 40 to 50.
An 1843 seated Liberty Dollar is a great coin. It was made at one mint Philadelphia with 165,100 made. It should weigh 26.73 grams. If authentic these sell from about $100 dollars in grade 4 and go to about $600 in grade 50.
The coins are worth less if they have ever been cleaned or otherwise damaged. Their value is reduced by 30% to 50% or more.
Both of these coins have known counterfeit copies being traded as collectables so yours are best looked at by a professional dealer.
Your image is not too sharp and I am afraid this is a copy of the 1800 dollar but since I am not able to see it in person I cannot say.
At a large or national coin show there are authenticators willing to give their opinion at the table for free.
