Question
I have a 1871 no mint, seated liberty "ONE DOL.", with "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto coin, but I can't find it anywhere on the net or books. It's a little worn, but the date is not. The coin looks gold, but in the worn area it looks almost silver. Can you please tell me what it is made of and what it is worth?
Thanks,
Vicki

Answer

1871 USA Dollar
Hello Vicki,

Is the coin pictured below the one you are asking about? If so, it is a US One Dollar 90% silver coin.
The 1871 USA Gold Dollar is a much smaller coin and has the ONE DOLLAR written on the reverse not abbreviated (as ONE DOL.).
It had a mintage of 1,073,800 made at the Philadelphia mint that year. It is designed by Christian Gobrecht and the specifications are 38.1 mm diameter with a weight of 26.73 grams and a knurled edge (straight reeding).
I hope to hear from you soon.
Good Luck
