Question
I'm trying to verify if this gold coin I have is genuine. I can guarantee this coin is at least 20 years old if not an original mint for it was in my grandfather's collections when he died over 20 years ago. The front of the coin displays a walking liberty carrying a torch and a tree branch in the other hand. The back of the coin displays a flying eagle. there are letters to display the date MCMVII.The front of the coins has Liberty printed on it, the back has United States of America Twenty dollars. The edges are smooth and not bumpy like quarters. The coin is three inches in diameter and a quarter inch thick weighing out at 6 ounces. Thanks!

Answer
Quinn,

Sorry but that is not a real coin.  It's something modern, made by a private company.

Most likely it is a base metal replica, with a novelty value of about a dollar.

But there is a chance it is silver, which would make it worth about $100

You would need to get it examined first hand by an expert to tell what its made of.

Try checking your phone book for local jewelers or coin shops.

Or check out the following websites for coin shows in your area :
www.coinshows.com
www.coinworld.com

I hope this helps,

Dan

I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
