Answer Hi Lisa, Counterfeits made in East Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe abound of Chinese and U.S. coins, and many other countries'. The genuine dollar coins (7 MACE AND 2 CANDAREENS) of Hu-peh province minted 1894-1911 weigh 26.7-27.0 grams and contain .7727-.7814 of an ounce of silver. They are worth $15 to $5000+ each. The description you give does not totally match an actual coin.
Most counterfeits weigh up light, are grayish, may look cleaned or antiqued and may have a dull or grainy surface. Weighing it may be the best telltale of genuinity. Some entrepreneurs do not see the significance of a copy or 'artistic rendition' of an 'historic' object as being different from the genuine article. It is considered 'art' or just a way to make money.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
