Question
I have inherited a necklace with a 20.00 gold piece the necklace part was specially made so it could not be jerked off ones neck. I also received a full set, in box, silver bars that have never been touched by human hands. Each bar is for each state and gold plated. I also have 1981, 1982, 1983 proof sets from the mint in thier cases.  If you could give me some idea of what they are worth or tell me where I can find out for myself.  Thanks

Answer
The $20 gold piece, since it was used as jewelry, is likely only worth around bullion which is a bit over $900 now.  If it's a scarcer date and mint it might be worth a bit more but that's unlikely.  The silver is simply worth bullion....actually a bit below silver bullion since these are novelty bars and have a more limited market than just plain standard silver bars/rounds.  The proof sets are worth around $7-$10 each.

Expertise

I specialize in U.S. three-cent nickels, but also close behind them are U.S. two-cent pieces, three-cent silver, and twenty cent pieces. Also, I have a bit of experience in the area of U.S. Early Proofs (19th century). However, I can possibly assist in most questions regarding U.S. Type coins.

Experience

I have read virtually everything I can find in print on the areas of U.S. 2-3-20 cent pieces. I have written articles on three-cent coins and Early Proofs published (or will be published) in Coin World.
