Question I was given two Dutch coins - a 1955 1 Guilder and a 1928 1/2 Guilder. Both are set in silver(held in position by 'claws' on one side)to form medallions. My uncle told me that the 1928 1/2 Guilder is very valuable. What would the value of each of these coins be? Both have been in circulation - the 1928 coin certainly looks as though it's had more use than the other!
Thank you - I look forward to your reply.
Answer Hi Pat, There were 37.5 million 1955 1 Gulden coins featuring Queen Juliana (1948-80) minted in Utrecht that year. It contains .1504 of an ounce of silver and it may currently be worth about $3-$4 depending on amount of wear and collector demand.
There were 5 million of the 1928 1/2 Gulden coins minted that year featuring Queen Wilhelmina (1890-1948). It contains .1157 of an ounce of silver and it may currently be worth about $2.25 with heavy wear to around $3 with moderate wear to maybe $5 with light wear depending on amount of collector demand.
If a coin has been damaged by becoming part of the jewelry or cannot be separated from the jewelry without damage then its value lies in the piece of jewelry and not as a coin.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
