Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Ellis Island Commemorative

Question
I saw that you answered a question regarding the 1986 coin. I have seen at least two varieties of these online, but none like the one I have. On the front is Lady Liberty with 1886 1986 on either side of her. On the back is two ships in the harbor and a view of the World Trade Center behind then. Are the two styles basically priced the same?

Answer
Joe,

I am not familiar with your specific commemorative, but I am sure it did not come from the U.S. Mint.

Knowing that, that only leaves the private minting companies (like Franklin Mint, Washington Mint, Danbury Mint, etc.) as its source.  As such, the secondary market as a collectible is almost non-existant, which is why u don't see it anywhere else.

The value of items like these is generally only whatever precious metal they may contain -- or a dollar or two if they do not contain any precious metal.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
