Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Unknown Coin

Question
I have a coin that resembles a Morgan Silver dollar, except the back is gold, and in the front the head is gold but the rest is a lighter color. The coin is covered on the front and back with a plastic coating. I would have thought it might be a fake coin, but the sides are not covered by the plastic, and there are ridges like a normal coin. Do you know what this is? I tried to look it up, but everything that comes up online has to do with silver morgans.

Answer
Drew,

A private company has heat-applied plastic stickers to your coin, selling them to the unknowing public as something special in a fancy box, but in reality it is now just an altered (or damaged) coin -- something experienced collectors do not want.

As such, it's value has now become only whatever the silver it contains is, less an amount for having to deal with the plastic coating on it -- probably about $10.00

Wish I had better news for you,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
