Question
Greetings, I have a Year 2000 Giant Quarter-Pound Golden Proof "coin" minted by the Washington Mint Inc. It is .999 pure silver layered wirh 24 karat gold. Is there any real value to this coin? How can I find out how much gold was used? I have searched evrywhere I could think and have found absolutely no info anywhere. Thank you for any help you can give.

Regards

Bali

Answer
Bali,

The amount of gold in the plating on this silver round is negligable -- a few cents worth at most.  The "layer" of gold is micro-thin -- like a fraction of the thickness of foil.

The value of your privately minted round will only be for the silver it contains, and since the wording they used can be deceiving, you will need to weigh it, to find out how many TROY OUNCES of silver it contains.

Then you can go to www.kitco.com to find the current value for silver, per Troy ounce, and multiply by its weight, to get its total value.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
