Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Washington Quarters

Question
Hi Dan,

I recently acquired a candy vending machine, which I intend to set up in lobby of my business. I've done a slight bit of homework and it appears that if I find a quarter that is pre-1965 or has an S mark it might have some additional value.

Is this a fairly accurate rule? When I opened up the machine it had 650 quarters in it. I figure there might be one in there that is worth keeping.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Scott,

That rule is true.

Any quarter dated 1964 or older is made from silver, and will be worth AT LEAST $2.50 at current silver prices.

For newer quarters, if it has an "S" mintmark AND a mirrored finish to it, then you probably have a proof coin (a coin specially made for collectors), that is going to be worth more than a quarter -- exact value will depend on date and exact condition.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
