Coin and Paper Money Collecting/old nickels

Question
Hello-
I have several rolls of nickels from the 40's thru 50's.  They were in my grandfather's things, and it was very unlike him to save something unless it was special.  These coins do not look in any way special, but am I possibly missing something?  I appreciate your help

Answer
Julie,

If the coins are circulated, then the outlook is dim.

If there are silver nickels (from 1942 to 1945) with the big "P", "D", or "S" on the back above the building, then these will be worth about 25 cents apiece.

If there are any from 1950 with a "D" mintmark to the right of the building, these will be worth about $7.00 each.

Otherwise, circulated they are prettymuch spendable.

If they are nice uncirculated coins, you would need to show them to a dealer -- you might get 25 cents to a couple dollars apiece for them.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
