Coin and Paper Money Collecting/possible roosevelt dime error

Question
Hi,
I work at a gas station and recently was given this amongst a lot of change.

obverse: http://i34.tinypic.com/rkx25d.jpg
reverse: http://i34.tinypic.com/34h6pmf.jpg

I can tell that the date says "196". I can nearly make out the last number, and believe it to be a 6 as well. I can make out "GOD" and "UST" from In God We Trust. The coin is slightly larger in diameter than the 2004 dime I have it pictured with.

I have no idea if this is an error, or if someone just flattened a dime (how, I have no idea). It has been bugging me, so any help you can give would be great. thanks.

p.s. sorry for the shoddy pictures.. all I have is a cameraphone

Answer
Chris,

If it's larger in diameter than the 2004, then it has to have been altered after leaving the mint.  When coins are strick at the mint, they are surrounded by a collar that prevents them from spreading out, so that all dimes are the same diameter.

I don't know how it was altered (perhaps in a press), but it has no collector value as such.

I wish I had better news for you.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
