Coin and Paper Money Collecting/thick 1978 quarter

Question
This 1978 quarter is about 1 1/2 times as thick as a regular quarter.  Neither
the images or the letters or numbers appear distorted but there is a slight
appearance of a double rim.  Can you tell me what this is and  if it has any value
to a collector.  Thank you

Answer
Hello Arden,

I do believe the coin has been altered but without seeing it in person no one can say for sure. I have seen coins made by very skilled craftsmen who press-fit one side into another by hollowing out one coin leaving the edge intact and reducing the outside diameter of a second coin to just fit into the cavity made in the first.

So this needs to be seen in person by a dealer.

Let me know if you need the name of an American Numismatic Association member/dealer in your area.
If you write back with
1) The general location (nearest large cities),
2) Telephone area code or codes and
3) Some postal zip codes in the area of the coins use the private question option by checking the box on the question page.
I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.

I hope this information helps.

Good Luck
PapaJack
