Question My son recently received a 1000 bill. The info on it says BTURKIYE CUMHURIYET MERKEZ BANKASI, it also says Bin Turk lirasi 1000. It is from 1970 and we wanted to know it's value. The currency exchange on the computer valued it at 800.00 or so. Could you tell me it's value and where to exchange it at. Thank you Tammy
Answer Hi Tammy, in 1995 Turkey had a currency reform making 1 million Lira equal to one New Lira. So, before 1995 it took over 1.2 million Lira to equal a U.S. Dollar.
The 1971-82 issues dated 1970 showed a suspension bridge and are worth about $1-$8 depending on amount of wear and collector demand. The 1986, also dated 1970, issues showing a turbaned Sultan are worth about .10 to $1.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
