Answer Hi Cathy, that is a copper 1 pysa (1/64 Rupee) from the Tanzania island sultanate of Zanzibar. It is dated 1299 (1881-82 AD) and may be worth about $1 with that amount of wear. There were 4.64 million minted that year.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
