Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1965 Quarter with deep groove along ridge

Question
Here is a photo of the coin, as well as I could get:

My guess is that the cheap metal corroded or something, but it's so deep. You can actually get a couple of finger nails in there (as I tried). I thought perhaps a prankster had somehow separated a coin and then glued it back together.

I tried weighing the coin, but my scale is for cooking and wavered between 5 and 6 grams.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Zeek,

I have seen this before on several coins.  I don't know exactly how or why it's done, but somebody manually altered your coin.  I don't think it was chemically done -- more likely by a machine of some type.

Considered altered or damaged, it has no collector value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
