Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1966 silver penny

Question
My daughter has recently come across a 1966 silver penny in our coin jar.  I would have mistaken it for a dime at first glance.  Is this something that could be worth anything or has it been dipped in acid to remove the copper plating?

Answer
Karen,

In 1966 the pennies were made almost entirely of copper -- zinc pennies did not start until 1982.

So your penny must be either silver plated or struck on the wrong planchet.

If it weighs 3.1 grams, then it is most likely plated -- no collector value.

If it weighs diffferent, then you should take it to an expert to be examined first-hand -- it could be worth $100 or more.  Try checking the following websites for listings of coin shows in your area where you can take the coin to be examined :

Good luck,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
