Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1971 Penny

Question
Hi, I have found a 1971 (D) Lincoln penny that has another head stamped or engraved to the right of Lincoln's face. I think it may be Kennedy. It is facing Lincoln (left). What is this for and is it worth anything? It also looks like it was once glued to paper on the back and later ripped off that paper. There is left over paper and glue residue stuck to it. Thanks, Kara

Answer

Lincoln - Kennedy Card
Kara,

Your penny is a manually made novelty item used for advertising.  Somebody would take a normal Lincoln penny, stamp the Kennedy image onto it, attach it to an informational card, then sell them to some businesses, after imprinting the cards with an advertisement for their business.

For an example, see the attached image.

Value at a couple dollars if attached to a card -- 10 cents if not.

I hope this helps,

Dan

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
