Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1988 Dime imperfection

Question
I recently came across a 1988 dime that looks like it was stamped twice. The coin was minted in Denver. The front side looks like the coin was merely scraped around the outside edge, which i assume happens alot with the normal wear and tear of a coin. The reverse side however, is alot more interesting. There was clearly another press and it appears to be backwards. Does this sound like something i should hang onto rather than just toss into the piggy bank with the rest of my change? In other words, is it worth anything? Thanks.

Answer
Hello Jeremy,

Since the second impression is a depressed and backward design it is from another coin being pressed into the one you have. This might sell as a novelty for less than a dollar at a coin show.

This could have happened at the mint or anytime afterward. This is a mechanical alteration and does not have a real demand from error collectors since it can be duplicated by hand.

Only defective die errors have high prices associated with them such as double image or rotated positions.

I hope this information helps.

Thank You and Good Luck
