Question
I have three Year 2000 giant quarter pound golden proofs featuring a picture of Sacagawea on the front side.  The back side has the United States of America on the top over an eagle.  It has 24K gold layered written in the micddle and 4 oz.  .999 fine silver written on the bottom.  I purchased these from The Washington Mint in 1999 for $96.00 each.  Could you please tell me what they are worth or who to contact about them.  Thank You

Answer
Mike,

Unfortunately, the resale market for privately minted items like these is almost non-existant.  The value of it will only be for the precious metal it contains.

The 24K gold plate is micro-thin, so the value of the gold is only a few cents.

The value of the silver is currently about $13.00 per ounce -- see www.kitco.com -- so 4 ounces is worth about $52.00

You can sell these at just about any coin shop (see your phone book) or coin show (see www.coinshows.com or www.coinworld.com)

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
