Coin and Paper Money Collecting/mint sets 1960-1964

Question
My father recently gave me several Philadelphia mint sets from 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1964. (The 1960 set is the Philadelphia and Denver mint double set.) I understand that unsealing the envelope really does not harm the value because the sets are sealed, and one might find a "treasure." I really don't know much about collecting though and these sets have kind of got me catching the "collectors bug." How do I recognize a truly valuble coin in these sets?

Answer
Don,

The only thing you really need to look at is the Franklin Halves.  If you find an ultra deep cameo half, it can be valuable.

It's hard to describe exactly what an ultra deep cameo looks like, but if you hold it at arm's length, the head and the bell will be frosty white, while the fields around them will be pitch black.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
