Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1849 Pacific Company $5
Expert: PAPAJACK - 9/26/2008
QuestionWhen I was young, I found this coin on the ground. I took it to a coin shop and was told that it was a counterfeit coin. They told me that not a lot is known about these coins and that it was the time of the gold rush and unfortunately a lot of coins were reproduced. It looks like a T was printed under the word company. I'm not really a coin collector and have been thinking about selling this coin. I'm just left wondering what this coin is really worth?
Answer
Hello Jess,
I do think your piece is a reproduction. This makes it worth the intrinsic value of the metal it is made from (Silver, Gold or Copper) and a bit more if the design is authentic.
I have heard of a coin like this before but did not get to many others collectors giving me a definite opinion on the piece when I asked them and cannot give you any more information on it.
I might be able to help you find a Coin dealer in your area you can take it to for their opinion.
Write me back with your approximate location, some zip codes for your area, and the nearest large city I will get you some names of Professional American Numismatic Association member/dealers, in your area. Please note that all ANA members and dealers are bound by our "Code of Ethics."
Please, let me know if I can be of any more help.
Thank You and Good Luck
