Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1887 Indian Head Penny

Question
I have an 1887 Indian Head penny.  To the left of the face is a large stamped "S".  I'm curious if you have seen this before and why it would be stamped.  I would also like to know if it increases its value at all.

Answer
Hi Susan,

The value is decreased as the "S" was added after it left the mint.  This could have been done by an individual or a buisness for promotional purposes, but there is no way of knowing which.

In used condition, you coin is worth under $1
