Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1953 Washington Quarter

Question
I have a question about a BU 1953 Washington Quarter.  The mint mark is not readable.  It looks like a flatened blob that is not readable.  The unusual thing is that because the coin is in such good condition all other characteristics are so clear.  Is this a common occurance?

Answer
John,

I wouldn't say it is a common occurance, but it could happen on any coin.  As the dies wear out, sometimes chips break off around the lettering, causing future coins to be struck with no detail in the lettering where the chip came off.  Small mintmarks -- especially "D" mintmarks -- are known for this.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
