About Dan Moore
Expertise My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library,
and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just
about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current
price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So,
with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value
any U.S. coin you have.
Experience I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Coin Collecting - 1881 Uncirculated S Morgan Silver Dollar
Expert: Dan Moore - 10/25/2009
Question I just started buying some coins off Ebay I have been looking and reading as I go and trying to find the best coins or paper money that could be of the most value in case I wanted to resell them at a higher value. I have an 1881 S Morgan Silver Dollar Uncirulated, San Fransisco Mint coming if you care to look at the picture, it is item no. 180418994629 I am not sure if you would be informed as much with the value of a 1937 Uncirculated Canadian One Dollar which I have coming I believe, the Serial no. is 4909470 Coyne Towers and the picture is item no. 180421268129 and I have coming another, same year circulated 32043703698 From what I read, Uncirculated coins and paper money are worth the most the mint, grade, year and any errors also play a part in it's value Are Silver Dollars a good investment? What coins or paper money do you suggest? Thank you
Answer Barbara,
1881-S is a rather common date for Morgan Dollars -- that means you can get a nice looking coin for little money, but future investment value will likely be less than if you had bought a rarer date coin in a lower grade. The amount you paid looks to be fair for the condition of the coin pictured.
You are correct, I cannot offer an informed opinion about the Canada notes.
And it is true that for any coin or note, if you have two of the same date, mint, or series (disregarding errors), the uncirculated one will always be worth more than the circulated one. And errors will almost always add to the value of the item, but sometimes finding an interested buyer can be quite difficult.
Silver dollars can be a good investment, but over the long run you will be better off to buy nice, natural looking rare dates, rather than higher grade common dates. Avoid cleaned coins and coins with damage or other problems -- they will be difficult to sell down the road.
But you don't have to limit yourself to silver dollars -- any rare date coin from any series can make a good long term investment -- right now the 1955/55 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent (a mint error) is moving up every month on the dealer price sheets.
You can get a copy of the price sheet dealers use for silver dollars online at www.greysheet.com -- it costs about $5 to download a current copy of the weekly newsletter. If you stay close to the prices on this grey sheet, and buy accurately graded problem-free coins, you can't go too far wrong.
I hope this helps,
Dan
