Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1959 Penny misstamped

Question
Joe,
I found in my pocket change, a 1959 penny which I didn't find unusual until I took a closer look. I know that 1959 was the first year with the memorial on the back. Well, you can clearly see the memorial stamped on the head side, vertical across the bust. You can see and feel the columns of the memorial on it. You can tell that it was struck a second time after the heads side was already struck. Is this the first you've heard of this one? I've looked and didn't find a single instance of this type of misstamp for this year or occasion. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks, Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
Yes I have heard of them and handled them.  The condition is paramount in this type of error.

I suggest you send it to the American Numismatic Association for authentication and certification.  The cots would be about $35 but it is money well spent since the coin would then be ready for sale.

Good Luck!
