Most of the time this is result of damage.  If you can reply with an image of the front and back of the coin I can give you an answer - damage vs mint error.  Thanks, Troy

Answer
Hi Cameron,

I have checked out your pictures.  No doubt the problems with your dime are man made after it left the U.S. Mint.  The coin is damaged.  You can always get a second opinion.  You can always have a local coin dealer check out your coin or you can join NGC's collectors club and submit your coin to see if it is authentic.  My company is an authorized NGC dealer - for around $150 you can get one error coin checked out.

The tip off - most error coins have very little wear because they are found immediately in new rolls from the bank.  Your coin is worn and it is obvious the coin has been mutilated.

Thanks! Troy
