Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1998 D Penny

Question
I have a 1998 D Penny that is a little smaller than a regular penny, but is as thick as a nickel. It has raised outer edges on the front and back. The edges are silver and there are spots on the front and back that you can see silver coming through also. I was curious if you had any information on the coin.

Answer
Hi Amy,
This penny sounds like it's been used for some kind of crafts project.
It's been machined by rolling in a press to condense the material into a smaller and thicker mass. The silver material is left over solder. At one time someone had connected it to something, perhaps a coins bracelet or the like.
These coins usually don't make it back into circulation, but they do show up every once in a while.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
