Question
Good morning.

Can you please tell me what a double stamped or mis-aligned die 1999 stamp from Connecticut is worth?

Thanks for your time in advance.
Christine

Answer
Hi Christine,
This will be a tough question to answer without seeing a picture of the coin. Misalignment and double striking are very different errors with very different values.
A misaligned coin, which is either off center or the two sides are off by a significant angle in their rotation from one another, is not all that rare. A dramatic error can put a regular quarter in the $25-$50 range, while a slight misalignment will only add a couple of dollars to the value.
A double struck coin is much more rare. Slight doubling that is hard to see with the bare eye may add $5-$10 in value. However, a bold double strike can easily go for several hundred dollars at auction. High end dealers often sell graded and certified double strikes for over $1,000.
If you ask a follow-up question and attach a picture I will be able to give you more specific info.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
