Hello!

I wonder what this coin is worth and some general information about it.

50 cents Ceylon 1892 (Queen Victoria)

Grateful for your help!

Answer
Hi Jesper,
Your coin is the first date of this series, which ran from 1892 to 1901. It is also one of the better dates with a low mintage of 250,000 coins. It is always a good idea to weigh coins like this, because there are replicas in existence. The genuine coin should weigh right around 5.8 grams.
Your coin looks to be genuine, but has also been cleaned at some time. When grading cleaned coins, there is a "details" and a "net" grade. In this case, the coin has Very Fine details. This grade sells for $20 to $25. Due to the cleaning, it would receive a net grade of Fine, which sells for $10 to $15 on the current market.
If the coin was in mint condition, you could expect $75 to $100 at auction.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
