Question

Caciques De Venezuela
I have a coin where one side is a man's face with crown and the wordings "CACIQUES DE VENEZUELA" on top and "MARACAY" at the bottom. The other side of the coin seems to be a eagle with wordings "CACIQUES DE VENEZUELA" on top and also small wordings "SIGLO XVI" above the eagle, while the wordings "ACUNADA EN CARACAS EN EL ANO 1959" at the bottom, and also small wordings "PLATA 1000" below the eagle. WIll like to know whether it was a Venezuela coin and has it any value?

Answer

Gold coin maracay
Hi Desmond,
This is a "fantasy" issue that was part of a large set of silver and gold coins. These were privately minted by the Venezuelan Inter-Change Bank Suiza and are referred to as the "Chiefs series".
Here is a link to all the various chiefs represented on these coins: http://www.italcambio.com/bille_mone/html2/caciques/NombreCaciques.htm
This is not something that would be considered legal tender or spendable money. It's a bullion piece meant to have value for it's metal only. Because these pieces are fairly scarce, you can expect $30-$50 at auction for the large silver dollar size pieces. The gold versions typically sell for 20-25% above bullion value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
