Question
Hi there. I found ten coins hidden beneath the floor base in a house I lived in about a decade or so ago, & was wondering if they were worth anything today. Probably enough to get me a candybar if I could afford the airfare, but one can hope! So here they are:
1. Gold dime-sized coin "5 centimes" & "republique francaise" & "liberte egalite fraternite" 1992
2. Gold nickel-sized coin "10 centimes" & "republique francaise" & "liberte egalite fraternite" 1939
3. Gold quarter-sized coin "20 centimes" & "republique francaise" & "liberte egalite fraternite" 1972
4. Silver nickel-sized coin "5 cents" & "canada 1867-1967" & "elizabeth ii" & "d.g.regina" image of rabbit
5. Taupe nickel-sized heptagonal coin "twenty pence" & "d.g.reg.fd" 1983
6. gold dollar-size coin says "estados unidos mexicanos" 1984 $100.
7. large silver heptagonal coin "estados unidos mexicanos" & "diez fesos" no money value written. 1982
8. large taupe coin "estados unidos mexicanos" "$20" 1981. "cultura maya"
9. silver dollar-sized round coin with heptagonal imprint. says "liberte egalite fraternite" 2 francs. 1981. "francaise republique"
10. silver large coin says "liberte egalite fraternite" 5 francs. 1971. "francaise republique"

Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou in advance for your time.

Answer
Hi Kimberly,
In the early 1990's you would certainly have enough for a candy bar in either Mexico or France. Unfortunately, both of these currencies have been demonetized (the euro in France; nuevo peso in Mexico). The Canadian nickel (#4) and English 20 pence (#5) are still legal tender and exchange for around 40 cents for both. As a group they have a collectible value of around $5, if the coins are in good condition and not damaged.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
