About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710
Monroe Coin Club Treasurer
Lincoln Coin Club Board Member
WINS Member #14
CoinMasters Member #1814

Coin Collecting - Error Penny

Expert: Dan Moore - 10/16/2009

Question
I am a coin collector and my great unlce is a big time coin collector. I have recently found a error penny though and i am wondering if it is real or not. I do not know that much about errors and i have never seen one like this. It would be more beneficial if i could just email you a scan of the penny. You know the old saying, "A Pictures Worth a Thousand Words" I will attempt to attach the picture. I used a a program called "PIXEN" on my mac to point out details.

If you are not sure about errors either, do you know of someone that is?

Thank you very much
Gary Bruckner

Answer
Gary,

I cannot explain exactly how your coin was manipulated like this, but having dates 3 years apart absolutely eliminates the possibility that this could have happened at the mint -- each year's dies are destroyed immediately after use -- 3 year old dies would no longer be at the mint.

So I have to conclude these extra impressions were done by somebody with a machine press and too much time on their hands.  Considered an altered coin, it has no collector value.

Dan
