Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Silver Eagle

Question
I have a 1987 Silver Eagle coin in good condition. What do you think it is worth?

Answer
Hi Branden,
Value depends on who you show the coins to. A dealer will usually pay around silver value or slightly lower. In this case, $15 to $17 based on the recent market values for silver. However, collectors routinely pay in the $20 to $25 range for good condition examples.
These are fairly common, but the proofs are a bit more scarce. Such a proof will have a small letter S on the front of the coin, also the background will have a mirror-like appearance and the raised features will look like they are frosted white. The proofs sell for $40 to $50.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
