Question
Hi Ronald I recently came across a Standing Liberty Quarter however it is pretty worn and I cannot see the date on it at all.It does have the M initial to the right of the last star my question  is there any way for me to figure out what its actual date is and how can I tell if it is an S? Thank You

Answer
Hi Shari:

One of the problems with the design of this coin is that the date and mintmark wears away more easily (than other coins) in circulation. There is no way to tell what your coin's date or mintmark was.

The "M" on the right is for the coin's designer, Hermon MacNeil. Any mintmark would also be on the same side of the coin, but on the left side, Both "D" for Denver and "S" for San Francisco were used. Coins struck in Philadelphia had no mintmark. You can look at the following link for more information on the standing liberty quarter: http://www.coincommunity.com/us_quarter_dollars/standing_liberty.asp

With silver trading in the $17 to $18 range, your quarter has a silver melt value of about $3.
