Coin and Paper Money Collecting/british half penny

Question
I know these coins aren't worth much but all the pictures I can find show them to be about the same colour as a current 2p coin, the one I found in my purse this morning is silvery like a 10p piece. Just curious if its just well worn?

Thank you for your time :P

Answer
Hi Katie,
I've seen coins like this before. It was most likely silver gilded for use in jewelry, such as a coin bracelet. Is there a hole at the top? This was often done also, so that the coins could be hung on a loop.
Regular wear cannot cause this, since the material underneath is the same dark colored bronze as on the surface.
If you had a modern 2-pence in this color it may be a rare error, where the wrong denomination is struck on the wrong planchet. However, this is highly improbable for the older pre-decimal coins.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
