Question
It says Georgivs vi ,its a half penny but not sure from where. Its from 1938 and at the top theres a hole, was it made like that? How much would a coin like this be worth? What country is it from?

Answer
Hi Christina,
There are a couple places your coin may be from. It depends on what is on the back side of the coin.
If there is a ship, then it's from the UK/Great Britain.
If there is a primitive statue, then it's from New Zealand.
If there is no picture and just writing, then it's from Australia.

Most likely you have one from England with a ship on the reverse. These coins were not normally made with a hole at the top, but were often used for making jewelry and things such as coin bracelets. This was a popular pastime back in the mid-century.

A mint condition coin without a hole is worth up to $10. Unfortunately the holed coin does not have a significant value other than as a curiosity.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
