Question
Hi my name is Mary I have a small (smaller than a dime) gold 1/2 cent coin dated 1851. 1/2 cent on one side, face with stars around it on the other. Is it worth anything?

Answer
Hello Mary,
Does the coin say 1/2 cent?  Or simply 1/2?
They did not produce 1/2 cent gold coins however they did make 1/2 dollar gold coins which would state 1/2D., 1/2 DOL. or 1/2 DOLLAR.

I suspect that if it is not one of the 3 that I described, it may be a replica coin.
If the coin has a picture of an animal such as a pig or a bear on the side that says 1/2, it is a replica.  It may still be gold but it is not rare like a genuine 1/2 dollar california gold coin would be.

Let me know what you have and I will try to enlighten you some more.
