Question What is the value for an 1878 S one dollar coin.
Answer Hello Bess,
Coins are valued on a scale from 1 to 70.
Most circulated coins range from Good (grade-G4) to Almost Uncirculated (grade-AU50) on the scale. Only a strictly uncirculated coin can grade Mint State between 60 and 70.
Very Good (Grade-8) = $9.00
Fine (grade-12) = $12.00
Very Fine (grade-20) = $14.00
Extremely Fine (grade-40) = $17.00 and
Almost Uncirculated (grade-50) = $22.00
For mint state grades the coin value ranged from $30 to $200 dollars. For a specimen coin with no defects such as having been cleaned, dented, scratched etc...
These are from a recent published price guide. But they vary according to demand.
The 1878 San Francisco dollar is common with 9,774,000 made there that year.
