Question
my question is a two part question...i have a ten dollar piece dated 1853 and a dollar with Abe Lincoln and Ulysses S grant on it... what do U make of them and how much do you think they are worth?

Answer
James,

1853 is considered one of the more common dates for $10 gold pieces.  In average condition it will be worth about $600.

The Lincoln/Grant item is more unusual.  Grant ran in 1868 and Lincoln was long dead by then.  It's possible that what you have is a Grant/Colfax election medal -- Colfax was Grant's running mate and looks alot like Lincoln.

To be sure what you have, you really need to send me pictures of both sides of the coin to :

Working.Man@usa.net

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
