Question
I found a DGREGFD Elizabeth 1974 1/2 new penny coin in my son's "savings" and was wondering if it is of any value;  There is no country of origin, but does have Elizabeth head on one side and a crown on the other.  Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Laura, this bronze British 1/2 penny featuring Queen Elizabeth II (1952-) was issued after the decimal system was adopted in 1971. The abbreviated Latin legend stands for 'By the Grace of God, Ruler of Britain, Defender of the Faith'. The NEW designation stopped being used in 1982 and the last half penny was issued in 1984. There were over 365 million minted that year so it is only worth about .10 with any wear, maybe .40 if uncirculated (no wear).
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info. He might find that fascinating if he has an interest in it.
